Quality of organic products

The public consultation on the future of the European Union organic production policy which took place in January 2013 has identified the main reasons for which citizens buy organic products. Number 1 is because they consider that organic production respects the environment and is sustainable. No 2 is because consumers expect a certain quality i.e. no GMOs, healthy food, local food, no residues…

Quality is important to both producers and consumers. To remain competitive and profitable, the European Union food sector must build on its reputation for high quality.

In the organic sector, this quality is guaranteed by the presence of the European Union organic logo on the food label. It can only be used if the producer respects all the European rules on organic production including participation in an organic certification scheme that requires submitting to controls and annual inspections.

The review of the EU organic policy is taking into account these expectations of consumers.
